Swearing is not protected by freedom of speech. That is not what that right is about.
When you use profanity, you are not excersizing a right to free speech, you are indulging in the tolerance of others. We live in a fairly tolerant society that usually accepts most behavior so long as it doesn't get abusive.
Don't you think that one has a right to not be verbally abused? I swear among friends who also do it, but I don't do it in most public places. It's just a matter of respect. It doesn't curb my right to free speech at all.
I can hardly demand respect or consideration from others if I never show it myself.
After all, think how far this could be carried: you think you can tell me to f*ck off? Fine, does that mean I can call you a cottin-pickin' n*gger, or a flame-broiled Jew?
Of course, Perl Monks doesn't seem to have a specific policy, but if it had one it would not be violating anyone's rights in doing so.
But you are right, this doesn't have a damn thing to do with Perl...
