There could be an issue with creating a large number of sheets in a workbook in Excel. Have you tried running it on a smaller quantity of files? I would try that and (depending on how long it takes to run this script) get a good statistical sampling of crashes at certain file quantities and see where the problem starts to occur... this will reveal if it is a quantity issue or a random issue.
