Older perl's have trouble with gcc 3's output. I suggest you use 5.005_04 instead. The changes in _04 are almost exclusively things to make it build using newer compilers.

Or fix the broken makefiles using your newer perl: 

cd into_your_build_directory
perl -ni~ -we 'print unless /: </' x2p/makefile makefile
