Is this not impossible using the data structures available to us within Perl? If we do not initialize before using a structure, then perl will autovivify, which is nearly just as bad. So to make this work with any kind of array system you would need to bypass perl's autovivification methods. Of course, you could skip any type of complicated data structure and stick with manipulating scalars. Fixed-length fields perhaps? Or somthing silly like that ;)
