Okay, so a pared down example of why this is kinda scarry is this: 
perl -e "use strict; BEGIN { while(bareword < 1) {1} }"

[download]
Cycles forever. No error 
perl -e "use strict; BEGIN { while(bareword > 1) {1} }"

[download]
Throws the bareword error ...wierd. --jay
