You do not need Red Hat. Solaris 8 comes with rpm2cpio. 
$ rpm2cpio perl-XML-XPath-1.13-alt4.src.rpm | cpio -iv perl-XML-XPath.
+spec

$ rpm2cpio perl-XML-XPath-1.13-alt4.src.rpm | cpio -iv perl-XML-XPath-
+1.13-alt-fixes.patch

$ rpm2cpio perl-XML-XPath-1.13-alt4.src.rpm | cpio -iv XML-XPath-1.13.
+tar.bz2
