Looks like you are trying to evaluate the query result: 

eval {
      $ref = $dbh_g->selectcol_arrayref($sql)
     };

[download]
so better try 
eval("$ref = $dbh_g->selectcol_arrayref($sql)")

[download]
and the eval will catch the error :-) if the query fails
