I know it's not what you asked, but instead of backticks, I like this method: 
foreach (@ARGV) {
  if ($_=~/\.z$/) {
    $_="gunzip -c $_ |";
  }
}

Putting that in front of your main loop means your while (<ARGV>) loop can process gzip files transparently.
