Actually, it is that "Per1" looked exactly like "Perl" to the person who typed in the copy for the web page. Go to http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/3682207.stm and search for "Perl" (3 matches) and search for "Per1" (no matches) and you'll see.
