It is hard to know what is a fair amount of time to add, if any. I think you have to ask yourself, how long would a user stare at a single page? Unless it is a long book chapter (or I am answering a monk's question :), I am rarely at a web page more that a minute or two.

You might also consider trusting your customers. Being treated with respect often helps a customer feel better about the product they are buying.
