Another node is my Pentominos Solving Quine. While this is an obfuscation entry, the methods are quite straightforward and you can read the unobfuscated, thoroughly documented version at http://halley.cc/ed/linux/scripts/quine.html and http://halley.cc/ed/linux/scripts/quine.orig.

You should be able to build on the basic code to support other shapes, though it may take a little work to see how, at first.
