The first time I installed Linux, it was on a "hightech" 486 DX2 66Mhz with a shocking 8MB of RAM. It beat Windows in speed back then and I used it very happily.
I don't see why the "X server" needs that much RAM though. Just run a window manager like Blackbox (I still use it ;-)
