Hi chromatic,

If I'm not wrong, not long after I posted (some 5 mins later), I noticed that I got one or two downvotes. That surprised me because, while I didn't exactly expect being voted up on that parent node due to its lack of real ideas/contributions, I didn't expect to be downvoted for sharing something positive about Perl. Some nice things some great guy has written. Something that I would be happy to read about.

I have been thinking about the voting and experience system recently after seeing that it can be abused - not by the people using it to vote up or down (although that's possible), but by people who make a post to intentionally get downvoted - to become the most unpopular.

If I had such a system of voting and experiene, I would only have a + vote. If you think a post is worth a +, you vote it up. Otherwise, you do nothing.

IMHO, doing nothing is like casting a - vote, but it doesn't have that sometimes 'demoralising' side effect, especially when you think you haven't really said anything bad or lousy.

Also, doing away with the - vote effectively solves the problem of people trying to become the Most Unpopular.

If you don't gain too many votes on your node, you'll know that it's probably not well received. But it's achieved without the - votes.

In an electoral poll (assuming a compulsory voting system), you either cast a vote on a certain candidate or you cast an empty vote (an invalid vote). I don't think you can cast a - vote on any candidate.
