I've got a paragraph of text stored in a scalar. What I'd like to do is: 
open a file
see if that file already contains the paragraph
if not, write the paragraph to the file (append mode)

I can think of at least one way to do this, but I'm concerned because this is an operation I'll be performing tens of thousands of times. I want to make sure I'm doing this the best way possible so as not to slow my script down unnecessarily.

Since there are so many experts here who deeply understand the inner workings of the language and how to make it do things efficiently, I thought I'd bounce it off you before proceeding.
