Everyone's answers to your questions are great as usual. The only thing I can add is that the documentation for Perl's threading is in perlthrtut for later versions of perl (5.6.0 >=) and the earlier version (5.005 >= ver < 5.6.0) perlothrtut, which I cannot seem to find on perldoc.com right now.
