While replying to this question, I reminded Anonymous Monk that rendered text often looks different than the underlying HTML. I gave the canned reply that you would need to use a HTML parser to strip out the tags, which may be imbedded in the text you're are trying to munge. I then punted with regards to the problem of keeping track of the tags to preserve the original formatting (putting the tags back).

Now it is no secret that I absolutely despise HTML/CGI/HTTP/<anything web related>, but it is a fact of life that there are some necessary evils. Is there a standard or rule of thumb when doing this? Can someone provide a real world example? While I might complain the whole way - I am always willing to learn.
