If I were you, I'd link to the french version of the node in question. Each node for which there is translations should mention the other versions at the top of the node (currently, this must be done by hand, though there may be a Better Way at some point.)
BTW, it is possible to use square-brackets to link by ID: [href://?node_id=NNNNN#target|title]. It's presently only documented in new bracket-link stuff, because the SDCers haven't fixed the docs yet.
