My recollection of the matter is that it was merlyn's stand against "vanity tagging" in subject lines. This is a practice that has more or less died out, but if you look through old nodes you will find prefixes with "(tilly) dee dee dee" and "(tye) daa daa daa" and so forth. There were a couple of reasons put forward as to why this was desirable. The most valid point being that it minimised the chance of two nodes being authored with the same name, which was a hassle for linking and searching.
