Most of this dreck has to do with leading a group of people...
I'm not sure I can apply it to programming, but I was browsing a book on leadership that used Shackleton as an example (I think it was "Shackleton's Way: Leadership Lessons from the Great Antarctic Explorer", though it looks like you get a deal from Amazon if you buy it along with another 'leadership by way of Shackleton' book :). Not exactly military/combat, but definitely leadership under extraordinary circumstances. Maybe one lesson is 'you can accomplish an awful lot even if you're not entirely successful' (and I find it truly amazing that they got through it without losing a single person) :-)
