if ($string !~ /asdfasdf/) { ... } is equivalent to if (! $string =~ /asdfasdf/) { ... }Not really. The latter parses as if ((! $string) =~ /asdfasdf/) {....} That's why not was invented... because the precedence of "!" is often far too high for most operations.
