Hmmm, that looks to me like a documentation bug; IFAIK => quotes identifiers; barewords matching /^[a-z_]\w*$/

Note that in perl versions 5.6.0 - 5.8.0 single-number vstrings are an exception, ie. v80 => means "P",. Perl 5.8.1 reverted this to meaning "v80", again.
