Try print the generated SQL statement. Like: 
my $query = "SELECT '" . join("','", @fromFields
+) . "' FROM $fromTable";
print $query;

You'll see that you are selecting string constants (the names of the fields). By the way I've never heard about column names with spaces in them - so I can't help write this the right way.
