When practical, standard mathematical notation should be used. It's practical in this case. |...| isn't dumb. Sometimes you might need to adjust the order of operations with parentheses. That's how things work now, and I assume it's no big deal to occasionally use parentheses with |...| since it's accepted to use them with abs(). "abs" is less math-like than |...| and parentheses.
