Oops. i missed the capturing parentheses . . . . *blushes* However, outside of that, i'm not clear on why one wouldn't want to do something like: 
    if ( index($string, 'new')    ||
        index($string, 'old')    ||
        index($string, 'number') ||
        # etc.
       ) { # etc. }
