Have you looked into BEEP http://www.beepcore.org/?

There is a Perl moudule, http://search.cpan.org/~dblacka/Net-BEEP-Lite-0.06/lib/Net/BEEP/Lite.pm; however, I don't know if it will be up to your task, but it is still probably worth looking into.

I have wanted to do a full implementation of BEEP for perl, but I just don't have the A. need for it, nor B. The time.
