I have the following line in a subroutine (using
strict, of course):
my $item = $self->grid($x, $y) and push @{$self->{'select'}}, $item
I get the error, "Global symbol '$item' requires explicit package name..." If I change the code to:
my $item;
$item = $self->grid($x, $y) and push @{$self->{'select'}}, $item
or to:
if (my $item = $self->grid($x, $y)) {
push @{$self->{'select'}}, $item
}
the error goes away. This behavior mystifies me. Isn't the use of
$item after the
and in the first example in the same scope as the
my declaration? If not, why not?
I'm using ActivePerl 5.8.4 under Windows XP.
