This is really geared toward sed, but I want to generate the strings in question with perl so it's a perl question too. But I can use perl regexes too.

Now my problem: I need a regex that can 1:1 carry any information in a given version number, matches its own string representation, matches that string representation of all regexes that represent lower version numbers, but is in turn not matched by them, and doesn't match that of higher version numbers, but is matched by them. Regexes that are not comparable (like for "4.0r7" and "4.0pre99") shouldn't match each other. It should be possible to get the version number back, but if it's impossible tough luck.
