I've been working on a perl script for years, updating it now and then, etc. However, just today, I've discovered a situation for which I find no explanation. Suddenly, syntax errors are no longer reported when I run the script. The shell just reports that the program exits with a -1 status (ie., 255). I would introduce a simple syntax error, like
s/foo/bar;
and the program just silently exits. It used to report the error just fine.
I run and administer my own system, so no one but me makes changes to the perl distribution, etc. What could explain this?
Oh, and if there are no syntax errors, the code runs perfectly well.
PS. "perl -c" reports no error on the code either.
