forking (which until 5.8 was a favorite of no one)

Off-topic, but I have to ask. What exactly are you talking about? I used fork long before 5.8. Maybe you're thinking of threads, which were real sketchy until 5.8, but some (such as myself) will argue that they're still sort of sketchy, and you should just use fork instead. So, again, what are you talking about?
