Just out of curiousity, it looks like you're doing work with Excel spreadsheets. There are a number of excellent resources on CPAN that already do a lot of the heavy lifting. For example, you have (in no particular order)

If you're working using OLE automation, there are a number of nodes on this site for how to hook Win32::OLE to Excel (and Word, for that matter).

What I'm getting at is that it may be that the problem you're attempting to solve may already be solved.
