As I stated over in Re: General memory management for embedded/extended perl with C threads Perl's malloc doesn't play nice in threaded applications. There are some advantages to using Perl's malloc -- most notibly better diagnostics.

"Look, Shiny Things!" is not a better business strategy than compatibility and reuse.
