I really just learned perl off the CGI101 book, real good source for newbs, and then I got this perl black book for references on regular expressions and shit.
Your resulting code that you posted will prove to be the biggest dis-recommendation for those two sites that I've ever seen. Yee-gah.

Please get some more traditional Perl training or learning. Visit http://learn.perl.org for some good recommendations.
