I have output from expect that is correctly going into $log_file
but I do not want to truncate the file ???

The question I asked is :
How do I get all the output currently appearing on the screen into a file
and have no output appear on the screen

1. I need to keep the output currently going into the file from $exp->expect
2. I want to append (ie not use w) exp->debug and/or exp->exp_internal to this file
The debugging information I require is outputted to the screen originating in exp->debug and exp->exp_internal.
3.I want no output to the screen

I need to use expect.pm as its legacy code which needs to be kept intact
