If you've read more than five posts here in the monastery you've heard people say to use strict and use warnings or  -w. For the newbie to the intermediate I'd like to add use diagnostics. It rules. It's like having perldiag come up through some AI for your particular needs. Not as complete, but it always gives you something to chew on. I just discovered this after merlyn mentioned it in the CB and it rules.
