I actually learned C++ first, then Perl, so what you describe has been less of an issue for me. I avoid abusing other languages by avoiding other languages.
Just a suggestion: if you intend to continue with C++, pick up a copy of The C++ Standard Library: A Tutorial And Reference by Nicolai M. Josuttis. Definitely a don't-miss book if you have to work with the STL.
