With PerlIO (default in Perl 5.8+) you can use the PerlIO::gzip layer. 

use PerlIO::gzip;
open local(*STDOUT), '>:gzip', $filename or die $!;

Now everything you print will be gzipped and shoved into the file.

Your "FILE=filename" snippit looks fishy, no variable sigils.
