First, it is indeed precompiled. Just in time, each time. {grin}

Second, there are solutions to save the bytecode and reuse it between program invocations, but most of us that would need that simply use instead mod_perl in Apache, to have the caching done automatically for us. You can use similar tricks for command-line programs.
