That's because in the Perl 5.8.6 Pod source for perlop (http://search.cpan.org/src/NWCLARK/perl-5.8.6/pod/perlop.pod) the C<...> tags are missing, i.e. 
One effect of these rules is that -bareword is equivalent
to "-bareword".
