You have to obtain the handle of the window you want focus in then call set focus on that handle. From Gtk+ in X I can do this: 

XRaiseWindow(GDK_DISPLAY(), (Window) x_win);
XSetInputFocus(GDK_DISPLAY(), (Window) x_win), RevertToParent,
CurrentTime);
