gaal++ has given you my favorite solution to this. Here's detail of how to use it: 

use PerlIO::gzip;
open UPLOADFILE, '>:gzip', "$upload_dir/$uldate" or die $!;
# . . .

If you wish, you can add the gzip layer with binmode, instead.
