Let's say you have:
<a href="?"><b>Hello</b></a>
If you pattern match using /<(.+)>/ your match will contain "a href="?"><b>Hello</b></a".
If you pattern match using /<(.+?)>/ your match will contain "a href="?"", which is usually what people are looking for.
