I realize it's a little late in this thread, but still just as relevant. I put a tutorial up on this subject a year or so ago. You'll find it here: Perl Idioms Explained - && and || "Short Circuit" operators. Shameless plug, but the tutorial and the discussion thread it provoked is pretty informative IMHO.
