Why not my @result = map scalar(chomp, $_), <$FH>?

That use of scalar gives me the creeps! Isn't this equivalent and less obfuscated?

my @result = map {chomp; $_} <$FH>;

Update: or for that matter whats wrong with chomp(my @result = <$FH>);
