found it -
my $dbh = DBI->connect('DBI:ODBC:'.$dbname, $dblogin, $dbpass)

was
my $dbh = DBI->connect('DBI:ODBC:$dbname', $dblogin, $dbpass)

forgotten to concatenate the dbi string !
