How to pass the $dbh object reference to a new program? ... cookie? ... hidden field?

i.e. after $dbh = DBI->connect( ...

How to pass the reference to another independent program. The code below does not work

$dbh = DBI->connect( ...
system ("prg2.pl", "$dbh");
...

prg2.pl:
$dbh = ARGV[0];
my $sth=$dbh->prepare( ... ERROR HERE

What to do? Thanks
