You can use ref for some of that: 
if ( ref( $your_var ) =~ /HASH/ ) { ... }

or in more draconian fashion 
if ( ref( $your_var ) eq 'HASH' ) {...}

[download]
It won't tell you whether a scalar is a string or a number.
