This is nearly a restatement of my most recent question, but the discussion there has veered in a different (though useful) direction than I intended. So let me try a different tack here. My question is a general one, not associated with any particular problem I'm trying to deal with right now.

Is it possible for a script to capture stderr from a piped open that didn't include a '2>&1' or equivalent in open-ed command line?

Some possible uses for this functionality include:

• Using some code in a cron job that you want to be really quiet, but which is not/should not be in other contexts, e.g. when run from the command line.
• Using a module that is not yours and that you don't wish to modify where you want to do some kind of processing on the stderr output, but the module just throws away (lets go through to stderr unmolested).
