Why should I need to learn Unicode programming in Perl.

Have a read of The Absolute Minimum Every Software Developer Absolutely, Positively Must Know About Unicode and Character Sets (No Excuses!) .

If you then decide that you want to learn how to use unicode in Perl take a look at UTF-8 and Perl (In Five Minutes) and Why Perl loves utf-8.
