An alternative is to provide patches to existing modules. Or, provide a compat layer for others who may wish to transition. I did the former with PDF::Template and it was very well received.
My criteria for good software:
  1. Does it work?
  2. Can someone else come in, make a change, and be reasonably certain no bugs were introduced?
