Thanks for this informative dicussion. I just sped up one of my scripts' running times dramatically, just by changing from /thing1|thing2/ to /thing1/ || /thing2/. This made a huge difference because I was doing a fairly long match over a file of several hundred lines, on a CGI script that runs many times a day. Thanks once again, Perl Monks
